TSA Precheck®, Clear and Global Entry – The Difference Between Them All

Airport security is an essential part of the travel journey. If you’ve flown recently, you probably have noticed that in addition to the general TSA security lanes, you have TSA PreCheck, CLEAR and the option of Global Entry. So many options, with one lingering question – what’s the difference between all of them?

Bradley International Airport is providing you with the information to help break it all down.

TSA PreCheck®
Benefits

Speeds up the security screening process for passengers who are departing from U.S. airports. According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), roughly 99% of PreCheck passengers wait in line for less than 10 minutes. Shoes and belts stay on, while laptops and liquids can remain in your carry-on.

How to apply

To get TSA PreCheck®, you first submit an application online and then visit a local enrollment center to become verified as a low-risk traveler. After the approval process is complete, you’ll receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN). You enter the KTN when making an airline reservation, which will get you PreCheck status when going through TSA screening.

Cost: $78 for a five-year membership

CLEAR
Benefits

This secure identity platform uses biometric technology to verify someone’s identity in just a few seconds by scanning their fingerprint or their eyes. When traveling, you’ll go through the CLEAR line at the airport and verify your identity using your fingerprints or eyes at a kiosk. From there, a CLEAR ambassador will escort you to the front of the general security line or the TSA PreCheck line if you’re a member.

How to apply

Travelers can begin the one-time enrollment process at a CLEAR kiosk at one of 52 airports across the country, which includes Bradley International Airport. During the enrollment process, your ID, fingerprints and eyes will be scanned and saved in the system.  Enrollment can be completed prior to travel or on the same day. Keep in mind, if you choose to begin the enrollment process online, the fingerprint and eye scanning must be done in person at a CLEAR location at the airport.

Cost: $189 annually

Global Entry
Benefits

Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that allows for expedited customs screening for pre-approved, low risk international travelers upon arrival into the United States. Global Entry includes TSA PreCheck® benefits and is recommended for those with a passport who travel abroad often.

How to apply

You must complete the application form and then schedule an interview at a Global Entry Enrollment Center. One is located at Bradley International Airport inside terminal B. After the approval process is complete, you’ll receive what’s known as a PASSID number – similar to a KTN – which you’ll enter when booking an airline ticket to ensure your reservation reflects your global entry status.

Cost: $100 for a five-year membership (Note: Price will increase from $100 to $125 on October 1, 2024)
