REAL ID deadline quickly approaching, here are four things you need to know

May 7, 2025. That’s the deadline in which passengers must have a REAL ID-compliant form of identification in order to fly domestically in the United States. A REAL ID is an enhanced version of a driver’s license or a state identification card that meets federal standards – marked by a star in the top right corner.

As the REAL ID deadline quickly approaches, Bradley International Airport is helping to ensure that passengers have all the information they need to know by getting answers to some commonly asked REAL ID questions from Daniel Velez, spokesperson for TSA New England.

Why do I need a REAL ID?

The 2005 REAL ID Act established minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards for a few official purposes, one of which includes boarding federally regulated commercial flights.

Can I travel with any other form of identification if I don’t have a REAL ID?

Yes, passengers can use other acceptable forms of identification to fly within the United States if they don’t have a REAL ID. Some of those additional forms of identification include:

  • U.S. passport or U.S. passport card
  • State enhanced driver’s licenses
