Travel Tips to Get through TSA Faster at Bradley International Airport

Going through the TSA security checkpoint is a must before boarding your flight. Here are the top four tips to help expedite the security process and save you time during your next trip through Bradley International Airport (BDL).

#1 Be prepared when packing

Any time your carry-on bag needs to be inspected or searched, it slows down the security screening process. Make sure your carry-on bag is completely empty before starting to pack for your trip to ensure there are no prohibited items in any secondary or lesser-used compartments.

“This does happen frequently and we often hear from passengers that they forgot the item was in their bag or didn’t even know it was there,” said Daniel Velez, spokesperson for TSA New England.

Your carry-on must also follow the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule, which is 3.4 ounces of liquid or less that can fit in one quart size bag and each passenger is limited to one bag in their carry-on. Items, such as approved liquids and electronics, should be at the top of your bag so if you need to remove any items for inspection they are easily accessible – saving you time at the checkpoint.

#2 Limit those liquids

You just learned about the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule and the 3.4 oz. limit. If you have a full water bottle, soft drink or even a coffee – it can’t go through security with you. Having to dispose of these items once you reach the screening machines can slow down the process. BDL has a liquid disposal container available to all passengers right before you go through the main TSA security checkpoint. If you do have to dispose of any liquids, beverages can be purchased past the TSA security checkpoint and there are free water bottle filling stations at BDL in each concourse located near gates 4 and 23.

#3 Dress to impress (the TSA)

When going through the general security line at BDL, you will need to take your shoes off. With that said, it’s recommended that travelers wear shoes that can slip on and off quickly (and socks if you don’t want your bare feet on the floor). Avoid clothing with too much metal, such as buttons and buckles, which can set off the metal detection machines. Large and bulky pieces of jewelry can also do the same thing. Leave those home or put them in your bag.

“When passengers fail to remove metal or jewelry, it delays the screening process for them and the people behind them because they then have to remove the items and place them in a bin,” says Velez.

#4 Sign up for TSA PreCheck®

TSA PreCheck® speeds up the security screening process for passengers departing from U.S. airports. Shoes and belts stay on, while laptops and liquids can remain in your carry-on. The program also offers passengers a shorter wait time when going through security.

“The goal of the TSA PreCheck® lane is 10 minutes or less and it’s very rare for a PreCheck® passenger to even wait that long,” explains Velez.

To get TSA PreCheck®, you need to submit an application online and then visit a local enrollment center to become verified as a low-risk traveler. Click HERE for more information.
